Best survival Knife

Postby ForFreedom » Sun Jul 05, 2009 8:06 pm

I know this topic will get some attention just the sound of it makes me beat my chest. I personally have a falkniven A1, RAT 7, Sog seal pup, Kabar utility, kabar heavy bowie, tom brown tracker, and a cold steel recon scout. I can't make my mind up on which one to keep in my BOB. I will tell you if you want to learn about some of these knives go to knifetests.com he beats the hell out of them until they break. Oh and i do have a frost mora for those of you who think he must like big knives the mora bye the way is the one I use the most. What do you carry and what do you think about it. :rifle: :sniper:

Most are 2"-3" folders, an 8" bowie style, Whitetail Skinner, 2 Kershaw Blade Traders-1 with drop point/filet/saw other with drop point/very large gut hook/saw. My house borders Nat'l Forest so my primary concern is large animal (ie Elk, Deer, Bear) processing not necessarily combat. I think my hatchets & axes outnumber my knives. I finally stopped buying the knives/hatchets/axes and redirected my money/energy to buying arrows/broadheads and getting more proficient with the compound bow since it has recyclable ammunition and it would be alot quieter to knock off a Deer/Elk with it than the .300 Win Mag.

I once owned (yes, past tense, it was stolen :( ) a Cold Steel SRK. I loved that knife. I've been meaning to get one again. Anyone else ever own one?

I have read alot of books on survival and survival tools you make in the field does any one have a place where is has all the specs to build your own recurve. Most books and sites I have been to Briefly touch on the subject and I have successfully made several bush bows but can't get a damn recurve to do right it either is too stiff are too flemsy. Can't seem to get them just right by the little bit of literature I have found

The old adage of you can do everything with a big knife that you can a small one,but you can't do everything with a small knife that you do with a big one. So IMHO if you are only going to carry one knife in a BOB I recommend a larger one. The kind you carry is a personel choice. I personally have one made by a friend of mine on another forum that is one of the best knives I have ever owned.
If by my experiences, mistakes, and training. I can help one person to gain the wisdom that will allow them to survive or to save the life of someone they love then I can truly say, that all of the things I have done have been worth every second spent.

I'm not sure what kind of steel he uses. Yes he makes more mostly as a hobby. He's on another forum if you want the link let me know and I'll PM you the info. won't post here as a courtesy to the forum owner here.

You need the best survival knife. Choosing the right survival knife is more than an exercise in individuality – your very life may hinge upon its proper selection.

Anyone who has ever spent quality time in the outdoors will vouch for the usefulness of a good knife but to the survival expert his knife is one of his best friends and the most closely guarded of his survival gear. Like a good friend, his survival knife should never let him down.

I agree,I know this isn't a new post but I've been giving this subject a bit of thought lately. I watched a bunch of videos on youtube and thought cool, knife tests. Then I bought a cpl knives highly recomended on the net, went out and used them and thought..."yup,junk" to me. and another one that everybody thought was overpriced junk is actually a great knife with alot of uses...to me, its more of a tool than a knife and you have to treat it as such, you wouldnt try and gut a fish with a camp axe,you could but itd be a pain. Then I thought about the 18yrs I was a commercial fisherman out of kodiak ,dutch harbor, sand point, false pass, chignik, homer, cold bay, prince william sound,Alaska(theres more),and throughout all of that halibut, tanner crab, dungeness crab, grey cod, black cod,and a ridiculous amount of deer hunting(in kodiak I used to fill my tags (6) and then fill my grandparents proxy tags (12more)) I pretty much used the same knives and not one of them except the knife used for cleaning halibut had more than a 3-4 in blade and they were either made by victoriaknox we just called them vickies little red plastic handle knife with a full serration, carefull they are stupid sharp and takes 5sec to touch the blade up,I'd wear two of these on my belt horizontally so I could grab on with either hand. then on my suspenders on my rain pants (I refused to wear a raincoat unless they were coming over the wheelhouse, too constrictive for me, you have to be able to move on deck) upside down I had a white handled dexter russel knife with an aggressive looking serration(kinda reminded me of a mora with a full serrated blade) taped to each suspender the sheath kept the blade really secure as I never had one fail, the reason I had two of each is on the water if the worse happened and you got drug over by your strong arm and your knives were rigged to use with that arm, you'd drown with the 4 at least I had options, because sometimes you need it right now and it has to be there,I've had another crewmember grab a knife out of my belt to cut the line that was about to ruin the day of a 3rd crewmember because it was closer to him than the 1 knife he was wearing working the way we were at the time. I used a 6in blade dexter russel to clean halibut when we were doing that. Other than a machete I've never had a use for bigger knives.
Then I got into driving log trucks after I got out of fishing and learned the value of a good sharp axe(the cpl I have are shaving sharp) You can cut cable with an axe lol (done it, no choice) and the camp axe I have and am very comfortable using is kind of my replacement for a bigger knife. I have a k-bar,bought it for it's history with the military and have taken with me camping and never used it always used smaller blades (5in or less most of the time I just naturally reached for the folder that's always with me)for stuff I needed a knife for and any kind of woodwork I used the camp axe(just had to replace my gerber camp axe that thing was pretty cool) This is just my opinion.
Moral of the story like was allready said is individuality, everybody has a diff style in what they are confortable with in a knife.Me, for a fixxed blade I like a shorter moderately thick blade for a fixxed blade(under 6in),for a folder...I've been carrying the same benchmade folder for like 12yrs and I'm getting ready to send it to benchmade for a tuneup(cpl screws are gone and it just needs a tuneup and I want some spare screws,still,12yrs.......) in the meantime I'll pickup some kind of two bladed old timer(like to find an old one) and I'll be happy with that too,I've had them before. Anyways, long enough book.
Later,
Lost

For the money (about $90), I think the SOG Seal Pup Elite is a great knife. There are better ones, I'm sure, but I like the SOG.
